Renesmee sat down near the bassinet that was right next to her and Jacob's bed, watching Alicia sleep. She was just over a week old now and the vision of perfection. Her cheeks showed a faint blush, reminant of her human part just as Renesmee carried in her own cheeks. She was stunningly beautiful and Renesmee could hardly believe that this perfect angel was her child. Alicia's chest rose and fell with every little breath she took and Renesmee was delighted just to watch. Jacob was out on patrol, looking for Crystal to rid the area of the last remaining large threat to the family, so Renesmee was left at home alone with the baby.
She checked on Alicia one more time before going into the nursery next to her and Jacob's bedroom to straighten up some stuff before Jacob got home. Most of Alicia's clothes were put away in the tiny closet or the drawers next to her changing table, so cleaning was easy. Once that was done, she went back to the bedroom to check on Alicia. She was still sleeping soundly, which Renesmee was thankful for. Being up and down all night with a newborn was a tad exhausting, but well worth it. By Carlisle's estimations, Alicia would develop a bit faster than most babies, so her newborn phase was sure to wear off soon enough. At least...that's what they were all expecting.

Nathaniel had figured out that the newest addition to the Cullen clan had been in the world for several days now. It had been somewhere around a week that Will had been burned to death and Nate had a strong feeling that the day left the world was the day that Nessie had brought her child into it. They had been lucky that day that so many were able to protect Nessie, and that Will was so inexperienced. Nathaniel knew that the fight could have become a far more dire situation, but he knew when to count the blessings before him. Which brought his train of thought back to his current path; following the unique scent of Jacob, and Nessie’s own scent.
While Nate had never had children of his own back in his time, he loved children. Having the chance to protect them from the true dangers of the night was what made Nate’s existence bearable. After a few more moments of following the unique smells Nate found himself at a beautiful home. Just as he reached to knock on the door he stopped realizing that the child in question would be asleep. After a second’s worth of debate he relied on the belief that Nessie would have impeccable hearing of some sort and he lightly tapped the door once. In a loud whisper he added, “I do not mean to intrude, it is Nathaniel Pierce. I was hoping to visit with you for a time.”

Renesmee stepped out of the bedroom to retrieve something from the kitchen to eat as she was somewhat hungry. Being a new mother really took it out of her, so she was famished. Just as she reached the refridgerator, she heard a light rapping on the door and a loud whisper coming softly through the wood. The voice she heard was familiar and she instantly recognized the name; it was the vampire who had protected her that day in the woods a week ago when she went into labor with Alicia. He had saved her and Alicia from certain death at the hands of Will. For that, Renesmee would be forever in his debt.
She quickly maneuvered over to the door and opened it, smiling at him and allowing him to come inside. "Oh, it's good to see you," she half-whispered, mindful of the sleeping baby in the bedroom down the hall. "I was hoping that I would run into you again sometime. I wanted to thank you for what you did for us in the forest that day. Alicia and I would have not made it out alive had it not been for you."

As soon as Nessie opened the door Nate bowed out of respect to her. It was the first time he had met her under calm circumstances and she was in obviously better health. She smiled at Nate and allowed him to come into her home. Nessie then proceeded to thank him for saving her life and that of her daughter; saying that they would not made it out alive if he had not been there. The corners of Nate’s mouth turned upwards into a slight smile, ‘A girl, poor Jacob will certainly have his hands full.’ Nathaniel bowed his head when Nessie finished her thanks and his smile and whisper remained, “I was only doing the right thing. I do not fit in with the others of my kind and for that I will always be grateful. It seems as if I have come at an inappropriate time if your daughter is sleeping.” Nathaniel smiled knowing the tales of what havoc a young baby could cause in one evening; much less what had been occurring the past week.
Nate took the bag off of his shoulder and held it out for Nessie to take, “There are gifts in there for your child. I was unsure of when I would see you or your family, or if you were having a boy or girl. Luckily I guessed correctly,” Nate chuckled lightly, “There is a pink blanket with her birth day embroidered in one of the corners, the edges are made of pink silk, and from what I am told the fabric of the blanket itself is of the finest quality. Meant to withstand even the finest of droolers.” Nathaniel chuckled lightly again, “There is also a glass rose for yourself, and as a peace offering towards your husband a pair of carved russet wolves that you can use for book ends or fire wood; which ever you see fit to use them as.” Nathaniel stopped speaking by that point realizing that he had done quite a bit of rambling. Nate allowed the silence to reign so that Nessie could have a chance to speak her thoughts. One thought suddenly occured to Nathaniel, "If you would life for me to; I can embroider her name above the day of her birth if you would like."

Renesmee smiled as Nathaniel seemingly apologized for coming while the baby was sleeping. "Oh, don't worry yourself about bothering her," she quickly mended. "She is actually a fairly heavy sleeper for a newborn, so it would take a lot of noise to actually wake her up." At the thought of something being loud enough to wake the baby up, Renesmee laughed. Jacob had actually tripped in the house earlier that week and thought that all hell was going to break loose if he woke up the baby. Alicia had not even flinched.
When Nathaniel held out the bag of gifts he had brought, Renesmee was shocked. She had not been expecting this at all, but she smiled and took the bag, setting it down gently beside her as he explained what was inside of it. "Thank you so much," she gushed. "Jake and I really appreciate what you have done for us already, but this is beyond generous. Thank you so much." She stepped forward and hugged him lightly before letting go and stepping back. "And if you would like to put her name on the blanket, I am certain Alicia would love to look upon that later when she gets a little older." Renesmee had not even thought to embroider Alicia's name onto her other blankets, but quickly made note of that as something she could do later. "Would you like to see her?" she asked, beaming in excitement and pride.

Nessie told Nate that it was fine coming when Alicia was asleep because the baby was actually a heavy sleeper. Nessie’s reaction to the gifts made him able to relax that she would find them inappropriate. That had also been Nathaniel’s concern before he had come, but in that same breath he did not wish to show up empty handed. After Nessie seemed to get over her shock the thanks seemed to flow from her lips. It was then Nathaniel’s turn to be shocked; Nessie gave him a hug. He returned the hug for manners sake but the majority of him felt odd about it. Nathaniel did his best to keep that hidden from Nessie, but there was still a part of him that felt at odds. The hug confused Nathaniel in the sense that in his entire existence he could probably count on one hand the number of hugs he had received. Instead of becoming wrapped up in his confusion he listened carefully when Nessie asked, “Would you like to see her?” Nathaniel smiled and nodded his head, “As long as it will not disturb her sleeping.”

Renesmee could sense that her hug shocked Nathaniel, but she decided that it were better not to mention anything that would make him feel any more uncomfortable. Instead, she focused on his reply to her question and smiled. "Of course not," she replied. "She went down a while ago, so she should be soundly sleeping by now." She motioned for him to follow her down the hall to her and Jacob's bedroom where Alicia was sleeping in her bassinet. When she approached the bassinet, she noticed Alicia was still sleeping soundly, with her little hands resting right by her face. She stepped aside so Nathaniel could get a good look. "This is little Alicia," she whispered and smiled. Alicia's Bassinet: www.minitots.com/i/00836.jpg

Nessie assured Nathaniel that Alicia was put down for a nap awhile ago and that she would be soundly sleeping for awhile longer. She waved for him to follow her down the hallway to the room where Alicia was sleeping. Nessie stepped to the side so that Nate could see the baby sleeping in her bassinet. Nathaniel looked down at the baby with a smile her two hands were resting close to her face and she seemed to be perfectly content in her dream world. That moment Nate was thankful that he had come to Forks; he did not care to reflect on what could have happened to this lovely child or her mother if things had gone otherwise. He wanted to reach out and touch the sleeping baby or perhaps hold her but Nathaniel’s common sense held him back from moving or saying anything to hint at his desired actions. He smiled in reflective thought as he watched Alicia sleep, “Children truly are a gift. I am glad that my own parents were able to have more children after I was gone.”

Renesmee watched with fascination as Nathaniel looked upon the sleeping Alicia. She had watched Jacob with the same manner when he first got to know Alicia. It was the same look Jacob had got many a time when he thought Renesmee wasn't watching. There was some part of Nathaniel that was curious about the little child before him and that seemed to be a common factor among men who were first time fathers or had never been around children all that much. She listened as Nathaniel described children as a gift and smiled. "Alicia was truly our little miracle," she said, lovingly looking down at her daughter and brushing her cheek gently. "Your parents had other children after you were...transformed?" she tentatively asked, looking back up at him. It was not entirely unheard of for parents to have other children if they lost one. Renesmee knew of several cases she had read about while in London. Grief took hold and something was needed to help the parents move on and sometimes, that was another child to love. However, Renesmee could not imagine ever being able to cope with losing her own daughter...it was just not fathomable in her mind.

Nathaniel finally looked up from Alicia when Nessie asked about his parents having more children. He did not realize he had tacked on such a personal statement to his observation of children. Nessie seemed to ask carefully; almost unsure if she should bring up the subject. Nathaniel sighed as the can of worms began to open. Nate chose to slightly edit his story and keep some of the more graphic parts to himself, “I was not much older then what you appear to be when I was changed, and times were far more different back then.”
Nate sighed as he reflected on his first few decades as a vampire, “It took me many, many decades to gain control of myself. Once I had I made my way to the library and researched my parents to find what had finally happened to them. I was fortunate my family was one of prominence and so their history was well kept. After two miscarriages my mother had a daughter; Natalie. I would like to think that they named her in memory of me.” Nathaniel chuckled softly and looked down at the sleeping infant. Little Alicia gave hope to Nathaniel that the world was not such a cruel place that could only produce monsters like himself. In his mind if there were beings so innocent and good as precious as Alicia, or as her mother seemed to be; Nate could not be in such bad standing, at least that is what he hoped.

Renesmee smiled as Nathaniel shared a little of his personal history with her, including the fact that he had a little sister after his parents thought he had passed on. That was something so personal that she felt like it must have meant he had given her some sort of trust to allow her in like that. Looking back down at her sleeping child, she could not imagine ever losing her daughter so suddenly as Nathaniel's parents had lost him, no matter what age he was. A mother never stopped being a mother, even when their child was grown. Renesmee knew this from experience with her own mother as she still watched over her and helped her whenever she was needed.
Alicia began to stir a few moments later and Renesmee picked up her daughter lovingly, cradling her head against her shoulder. "Would you like to hold her?" she asked Nathaniel sweetly. "I don't mind at all if you hold her since you are the very reason she is alive today and she does not cry around strangers since our family is so large." She looked back at him with the reassurance that she was totally sure of him holding the baby.

Nathaniel unnecessarily held his breath as soon as Alicia began to slip out of her dream world. She fidgeted for a few moments before fully waking up. Nessie carefully cradled her daughter in her arms and against her shoulder. Motherhood truly seemed to fit Nessie; she seemed to be a loving young woman. It also eased any unfounded thoughts that he had saved the wrong person. All of his true fears had left him though when he had reached back to make certain Nessie was alright and he saw her entire life.
That thought brought with it another when he remembered that Nessie did not know about his gift and he had not apologized for that yet. Nathaniel was about to tell Nessie about his gift and apologize for seeing her history without her permission when she asked if he would like to hold Alicia. Nathaniel was unsure if Nessie had just asked what he had heard but she then began saying that she would not mind allowing him to hold Alicia. By the time that Nessie explained that Alicia was perfectly fine around strangers Nathaniel realized that he had not heard Nessie wrong.
Nathaniel completely forgot his desire to hold Alicia when faced with the choice. In that second of decision Nate could not remember in his life feeling so much panic. Nathaniel had every intention of declining the beautiful wonder that Nessie offered, but her reassuring smile helped him to calm down severely. ‘Come now man you are almost for and a half centuries old; I think you can handle holding a baby.’ Nathaniel took an internal breath and took little Alicia into his arms. After a few tense seconds of nothing going wrong Nate felt himself relax. “You are so beautiful little one, and so very blessed.” Nathaniel heard himself whisper to Alicia.

Renesmee watched with satisfaction as Nathaniel took Alicia into his arms. It was one of the most precious sights she had ever beheld. Just as she watched that scene unfold, she heard a familiar voice enter the house. It was Embry's son, EJ. Renesmee had not expected visitors for a while, but it was nice to have company in the house while Jacob was on patrol. "Excuse me one second," she said politely to Nathaniel before slipping out into the living room where she found EJ waiting. "EJ!," she greeted enthusiastically. "I wasn't expecting you today, but it's good to see you. Why don't you come into the room and see Alicia. I already have one visitor, so one more shouldn't hurt." She lead EJ back to her and Jacob's room where Nathaniel was still holding Alicia.

OK Aunt Ness, I think it about time I see the baby anyway seeing him Jake is my blood cousin EJ laughed and fallowed Nessie into the bedroom and there he saw Nate holding the baby. She looked so tiny so sweet in his arms EJ could easily see a comparison between Nessie JaKe and the baby. " Hey Nate," EJ said cheerfully looking at the vampire. " It good to see ya again man. She is really cute isn't she. I think she looks a lot like you Nessie, she must Jake is not too cute." Embry laughed after his last comment. he could help but to make a joke about Jake that was way EJ was. " So is Jacob feeling ok now, he must be because he is looking for Crystal right?
