Vanessa, although she had been in Forks for a few weeks now, had not had the chance to explore aound outside of Forks. She hadn't been to Port Angeles or Seattle yet but planned to in the near future. So, she had a couple hours of free time before she had to get home so she decided to go check out La Push. She had found a beach and was very greatful. Although it wasn't like the beaches she'd vacationed near in Florida and California, it was still a beach. She kind of just wanted to be able to open the clouds and let the sun shine through. She knew that First Beach would be beautiful if there was a little more sunlight. It could be the perfect setting for a beautiful picture.
As long as Vanessa had been in Forks, she had met very few people. She still considered herself an outsider for just that reason. She didn't have any really good friends that she could call up and talk about her troubles with so she found herself keeping them all bottled up inside. Vanessa and her mother had gotten into an argument about her father. Vanessa wanted to get to know him alot better, but her mother didn't want her to. She wanted to know why.
But, she would ask those questions on a later date. For right now, all she wanted to do was sit on the log she had found and stare out into the water. And just think.

Lucy had been thinking a lot about Kaleb lately and how her latest attempt at an embarrassing situation was an epic fail. She had come to First Beach to walk around and try to work out some of the thoughts that had been plaguing her lately. Kenzie had finally gotten a hold of Jon and she was taking advantage of the free time that they both had. That was something strange that Lucy had noticed that ever since a few days ago Kenzie and Jon had been acting strange around one another.
It had also been a long time since Katelyn had ever seen Nathaniel as the way Lucy saw it, Nate had probably skipped town and never said anything. Lucy sighed to herself and decided to walk closer to the water’s edge. When she looked up to glance at the beach around her Lucy noticed that she wasn’t the only one that seemed to be enjoying the peace that the beach seemed to offer. She debated with herself for a few moments on whether or not she should go over to visit the girl who was lost in her thoughts. After a few seconds Lucy figured it would be really awkward if she didn’t say something and just tried to walk past. Lucy walked over with a friendly smile keeping space between herself and the other girl, “Hey mind if I join you? My name is Lucy by the way.”

Vanessa had just been thinking about her and her mother's argument and what she would do when she got home when she heard someone walking towards her. She looked up when she heard someone say“Hey mind if I join you? My name is Lucy by the way.” She realized this must be the Lucy that was friends with Katie and Kenzie and Kaleb. She looked up her eyes still a little glazed over from all her thinking "Yeah sure. Go for it. Im Vanessa." She smiled a little but looked back down and continued thinking.
She had come to the beach to be alone but, hanging out with Lucy might be more fun. She just had to stop being such a freak and staring off into space.

Not really minding the sand that would get on her Lucy plopped down and rested back against the log that Vanessa was sitting on. Lucy noticed that Vanessa’s total attention was not on what was happening right then but more like something that seemed to be going on in her life perhaps. Lucy watched her for a moment and wondered if it would be better to just leave so that Vanessa could return to her thoughts. Deciding that Vanessa might need to talk to someone Lucy settled back and looked back to Vanessa who seemed to have slipped into her own dream world. A snort of laughter turned into a small giggle, “Sorry I just thought something my friend Katelyn said once. Apparently I had a distant look on my face because she told me not to think too hard or I might break something.” Lucy then wondered for a few second whether or not she was boring Vanessa out of her mind.

Lucy sat down next to Vanessa. Vanessa realized it must seem rude that she couldn't pay attention, but she shook her head to get all her attention back to the present. Lucy started laughing and Vanessa looked over curiously. “Sorry I just thought something my friend Katelyn said once. Apparently I had a distant look on my face because she told me not to think too hard or I might break something.” She laughed as Lucy said that. Katelyn did seem like the kind of person to say that. "Yeah, I guess I must look like I broke something right now." Her mother used to tease her about her little daydreams. People could have entire conversations and would have to fill Vanessa in later because she had totally tuned them out. "Sorry, I'm kind of spacey today. I'm not trying to be rude or anything." She had felt the need to apologize. Surely, she wasn't much fun to hang out with when she was like this.

Lucy noticed Vanessa shake her head almost to herself; it was something that Lucy recognized. She had done it many times before when she mentally wanted to clear her head and try to get rid of any thoughts or memories that she didn’t want to reflect on. Vanessa laughed with her and Lucy grinned hoping that the ice had been broken enough. Lucy’s grin grew a little when Vanessa said, "Yeah, I guess I must look like I broke something right now." Lucy shrugged, “Eh it doesn’t look like you broke anything important.” A few moments later Vanessa was apologizing for seeming spacey; as well as not meaning to seem rude.
Lucy laughed a little and waved Vanessa’s apology off, “Oh don’t even worry about it. If you ever talk to my friends Katelyn or Kenzie then you would know you are in great company.” There were also several instances when Kaleb would tease her about day dreaming and Lucy giggled a little and spoke with a grin, “Or you could talk to Kaleb. He would definatly be able to tell you how spacey I am sometimes, so don‘t even worry about an apology.” Lucy was then wondering if she was running into her bad habit of talking too much. With an internal sigh and the hope she did not annoy Vanessa too much Lucy settled back against the wood and watched the waves.

Vanessa smiled. "I hope not. I'm going to need all I have to go home tonight.." She stopped there and looked away. She wasn't quite ready to spill her guts and everything about her mother to someone she just met. Although Lucy seemed nice enough, Vanessa didn't want to scare her away with all the details about her and her mother and her messed up family.
“Oh don’t even worry about it. If you ever talk to my friends Katelyn or Kenzie then you would know you are in great company.” Vanessa smiled. "Yeah, I met them at the high school but we only hung out during lunch so I don't know them very well." She didn't know Kaleb very well either. Just met him once in the diner. She didn't really know anyone well in Forks or La Push. She wasn't really a social butterfly or anything. It was hard for her to get to know new people, or to even work up the courage to talk to them.

Lucy laughed when she heard Vanessa say, "I hope not. I'm going to need all I have to go home tonight." Realizing that Vanessa was a little silent Lucy looked over at her to see that Vanessa seemed to be yet again twisted up in her thoughts. After Lucy had made the comment about meeting her friend Vanessa said that she had met them back when school had been going on. Then Lucy felt a little bad because she wasn’t sure who Vanessa was. After a moment’s thought she flashed back to a conversation that she had with Kaleb on the same beach that she was sitting now. Lucy sighed to herself that she had gotten so upset when Kaleb had started talking about Vanessa that she had started to walk away from him.
That conversation had turned out better then she had expected when Kaleb cut off her escape rout and admitted how he felt about her. It was so easy for Lucy to day dream about Kaleb and she mentally kicked herself for letting that happen around someone she did not know very well. Lucy hoped that Vanessa had been honest in saying that she got lost in thought a lot. Hoping that it wouldn’t be too much of a bother Lucy got out her cell phone and tapped out a quick message to Kenzie and Katelyn, ‘Hey you should come hang out with me and Vanessa at First Beach.’ After hitting ‘SEND’ Lucy put her phone into her back pocket and settled back down in her seat.

Sitting at her desk in her room, Katelyn aimlessly surfed the internet and checked her e-mail. It had been days since she had been able to do anything outside of her house. Her mother had gone schitzo on her earlier in the week to clean the entire house for company that was coming in this weekend. That meant zero social interaction for Katelyn as she scrubbed every square inch of the upstairs, including her room, her bathroom, the guest room and bathroom, and even the hallway. It was excruciating to a seventeen-year-old to be cut off from her two best friends but her parents were strict on what she could and could not do, especially given her stunts two years previous. However, she had been on her best behavior since that time, but they still had not let up.
Getting up from her desk, she felt her phone vibrate in her back pocket. She opened it up to a text message from Lucy. Feeling the urge to get out of her prison, she decided to make a break for it. Tapping out her reply that she was on her way, she grabbed her shoulder bag, keys, and ran down stairs. "Where do you think you're going young lady?" her mother asked from the kitched. "Just down to the beach for a little while. Lucy's down there and I haven't seen her in over a week," she explained, hoping her mother was in a pleasant mood. Her mother gave her one of the famous "Mom" looks before saying "Alright, but be back before nine tonight." Katelyn smiled and ran out the door to her car, hopping inside and starting the engine. A short drive later and she was at First Beach.
Getting out of her car, she walked along the shore for a few minutes and admired the beauty of the beach. It was breathtakingly beautiful in the summertime, which was something she appreciated. However, she was drawn away when she realized she needed to find Lucy. A short walk down the shore lead her right to Lucy and Vanessa, whom she remembered meeting just before school let out for the summer. "Hey, guess who got released from house arrest?" she asked jokingly as she approached them.

Lucy and Vanessa sat on the log in silence. She was just looking out into the ocean. It was rocky today. Not the right waves for surfing. Not that she surfed, but still. Vanessa looked over as Lucy got out her phone and tapped something out then put it away. Probably texting Kenzie or Katelyn or maybe even Kaleb.
Ten or fifteen minutes later Katelyn walked over to Vanessa and Lucy. "Hey, guess who got released from house arrest?" Vanessa just smiled and waved a little. She had met Katelyn just before school had ended and she always seemed to be peppy or happy, it was a nice change then her mother at home, who always seemed down or depressed. Katelyn had apparently just gotten off from a grounding or something. Vanessa laughed "What did you do?" She couldn't think of anything that Katelyn would do to make her parents angry. She seemed like a good girl more then anything else. She was just kind of curious.

The breeze flowing around Katelyn with the light hint of a sea scent made her smile. It had been so long since she was able to come down to an actual beach, so she was taking in every second of it that she could before she would return to the dungeons of her house with her prison guards known as her parents. Seeing Lucy made her smile because it meant that at least one of her best friends was there. She almost wanted to pinch herself and make sure that she was really outside of her house. When Vanessa asked what she had done, she turned to her and laughed, "Oh nothing really. My parents are just slightly paranoid sometimes about what I do, plus we're supposedly having company this weekend so I've been stuck at home cleaning every inch of surface visible."
Rolling her eyes to show her obvious enthusiasm about the situation, she plopped down on the log and looked back at Lucy. It was wonderful to be outside of the house. Wonder how many times I'll even get to do this the rest of the summer? she thought to herself. The obvious answer was next to none with the way her parents were getting on her case about applying for colleges and getting ready for the SAT test, but she knew that she could weasel her way around it somehow and get out every once in a while. Looking at Lucy, she smiled innocently and giggled. "So um...where's the devilishly handsome Cowboy?" she asked, raising her eyebrows up and down a few times.

Lucy laughed when Katelyn came sauntering across the beach to where she and Vanessa were sitting. Kate joked about being let out of house arresst and Lucy rolled her eyes but was glad that she was able to get out of her house. They had not been able to hang out very much over the summer because her parents were not wanting to let up. In Lucy’s opinion she thought Katelyn’s parents were trying to wring out every last drop of punishment before Katelyn left the nest so to speak. Vanessa asked, “What did you do?” A snort escaped and Lucy shook her head glancing back at Vanessa, “Oh trust me you don’t wanna know.”
Katelyn gave a couple reasons to Vanessa that only lightly covered the situation but Lucy wouldn’t even come close to saying anything unless Katelyn wanted to talk about it. A few seconds later Katelyn not so subtly asked about Kaleb. Lucy rolled her eyes at her friend and if Katelyn thought she was going to start getting goo-goo about Kaleb in front of a girl that she didn’t know very well then Kate was off her rocker. Not to mention the fact that it probably would be weird on Vanessa’s part to listen to all of that.

Vanessa had asked Katelyn what she had been in the house so long for and got her answer. "Oh nothing really. My parents are just slightly paranoid sometimes about what I do, plus we're supposedly having company this weekend so I've been stuck at home cleaning every inch of surface visible." Vanessa had never really been grounded before, with her mom's late night partying, she could usually get away with anything she wanted. Back at the old house, her mother had caught her a few times with bottles of Vodka and could care less. "Oh. That sucks."
Then, Katelyn mentioned something about a cowboy. Cowboy? Vanessa laughed. It must've been a nickname for someone, because as far as she knew, no one around here was an actual cowboy. She looked towards Lucy for some sort of answer but got nothing. Vanessa realized she must feel the same way talking about this "cowboy" and she felt like talking about her mother.

Katelyn definitely got the memo not to talk about Kaleb in front of other company by Lucy's exaggerated eye roll, which she only did when she was either very sarcastic or not in the mood to talk about something in front of other people. Instead, she decided to change the subject so that she wouldn't get pummeled later by Lucy, who may have looked tiny but could sure beat the living daylights out of anyone who messed with her. "So, being that I have a limited amount of freedom before I have to go back to the prison that is my house, I say we make use of that time and do something fun," she declared, hopping up from the log she had plopped down on. If she was going to have to go back, she was going to have a little fun while she could, even if it was just one afternoon for the next week or so. "My summer has been craptastic thus far, so I need to liven it up or else I might die of boredom!"

Lucy noticed Vanessa look towards her after the exchange about Kaleb. She then realized that Vanessa probably had no idea who they were talking about. “Oh sorry, Cowboy is actually this guy Kaleb Hall. You might have met him during school, or anytime really.” Lucy laughed a little at that last comment, “I mean Forks isn’t exactly known for being a big city here in Washington.” Lucy wasn’t sure if Katelyn would see that as an invitation to keep talking about Kaleb, and she seemed to talk about her limit of freedom. She did not show any signs of the sarcastic thought, ‘This summer is practically of your own making.’
Lucy did not want to be a jerk and bring anything up especially in front of someone who knew nothing about the situation, so she sighed internally and focused on Kate when she jumped up. Kate claimed that she wanted to do something fun with the time that she had. Lucy bit back a laugh when Katelyn said, "My summer has been craptastic thus far, so I need to liven it up or else I might die of boredom!" Lucy made a dramatic sigh and muttered, “Promises, promises.” She laughed and looked between the girls before turning to Vanessa, “Do you have time to go catch a movie or something? Didn’t think to ask how busy you might be today.”
