Kenzie smiled when Lucy explained to Kaleb who Jon was. Just hearing the word boyfriend made her happy because it meant that he was hers in some sense. Looking at Lucy, she smiled and arched her eyebrow a little. Guess I'm not the only one that isn't single around here for much longer... she privately mused. This 'Cowboy' guy seems to have stolen my dear Lucy's heart. Pulling herself from her ever-entertaining thoughts, she focused on the conversation at hand. "Yeah, I would definitely say I'm bringing Jon along, just so Kaleb doesn't feel like he's the only guy," Kenzie laughed. At the same time, she was thinking about Katelyn. "Well, what about Kate?" she blurted out loud. "I'm not even sure her parents will let her come...you know how they get sometimes." Kenzie knew that out of all their parents, Katelyn's were the most strict when it came to doing things alone and away from them, especially involving a road trip out of state.

Kaleb let out a short chuckle when Lucy mentioned that he would be getting to play tour guide again. His thoughts slipped back to that certain afternoon that he and Lucy had spent together. 'Such a cutie on that 'nice horsey.' He thought and felt his grin over take his expressions. He wondered if Lucy had told Kenzie about their rendezvous through the forest and their picnic. Snapping out of his thoughts, he heard Kenzie bring up someone named Jon, and Kaleb listened as Lucy clarified that Jon was Kenzie's boyfriend. He glanced back at the proud look on Kenzie's face and nodded his head. "Sure, I'd love to meet Jon, and exactly, the more the merrier." Then Kenzie brought up the subject of Katelyn. "Man I haven't seen Kate in what seems like forever, she doin alright this summer?"

Lucy could feel her glowing as the excitement about the road began to bubble inside of her. ‘This is going to be absolutely awesome!’ She grinned when Kenzie said Jon would come along so Kaleb would not be left out as the only guy. Which made Lucy happy because Kenzie would mellow out when Jon was around, and she would get to spend time with her boyfriend, when he would normally be tied up at the reservation. Lucy felt herself flinch a little at the thought of asking Kate’s parents about the road trip. “I don’t know they have cracked down on Kate a lot. I think her mom would have a heart attack just from us asking.”
Lucy thought about her own parents and the fact that she had her parents wrapped around her little finger. It was how Lucy was able to get her parents to move to Forks and she was perfectly certain that same thing would help her to get permission about the road trip. Katelyn’s parents used to be the same way, and there was still a part of them that was. Kate had gone through an extremely ruff patch and since then Katelyn’s parents had seriously tightened the leash so to speak. “After some of that stuff I don’t think that her parents will go for it.” Lucy felt a small frown on her face and she turned to Kaleb, “Speaking of parent’s permission; will your parents let you go?” That thought she asked allowed was a bit of a bummer; if Kaleb couldn’t come then she was pretty sure the trip would not be half as fun.

Kaleb shook his head, "Yeah, prolly, I don't think it will be a problem. Mom had kind of been wanting someone to check on the house anyways. We still have our ranch back in Texas it's just kind of sitting there, all lonely. I bet she wouldn't mind if we went and checked in on it. And another plus is, we won't have to pay to stay there."
As he said this, he became more and more excited. This was beginning to sound better and better. They would probably need to take air mattresses but still, the girls could room in his parent's old room and the guys could room in his old room. There were a couple of sparse pieces of furniture still, and the kitchen was still in tact, with dishes and silverware too. 'This'll be a sinch. We can go swimmin in the tank, hiking up The Hill I wonder what Mom and Dad did with the ranger...?" As he slowly came back to earth, out of his day dreaming, he realized that he had somehow acquired and butchered a straw wrapper. Staring at the damage dealt to the innocent wrapper he slowly told himself, 'Slow down there cowboy, you're not entirely sure this is gonna work out yet.'

Lucy felt her grin growing as Kaleb explained that his family still had their ranch back in Texas. ‘This is totally meant to happen. Oh I cannot wait!’ “Well we would be doing your mom a favor.” Lucy said seriously before a small laugh escaped. “Just have to come up with a good way to break it to the ‘rents about road tripping with two guys.” Lucy was concerned for a few moments but she thought about the situation and realized that she could get her parents to agree to just about anything. After she talked herself out of concern Lucy glance over to Kaleb to see that he had turned a straw wrapper into a pile of pieces. With a mock frown on her face Lucy watched the small pile of paper and sighed then looked to Kaleb, “Did it look at ya funny Cowboy?” Unfortunately Lucy could not hold the frown as she felt a mischievous grin split her face.

Kaleb looked up at Lucy as she started to say something, still a bit incoherent. He frowned back at her and then realized that she was kidding him about the straw wrapper and then he couldn't help but laugh and flash his crooked grin right back at her mischievous, yet still amazing smile. Laughing, he said "Oh, it sure did, but I took care of it, haha wait, did you just say 'rents?'." Then smiling a mischievous grin of his own he picked up the bits of paper and held them in his hand. Turning to Lucy he opened the palm of his hand and blew the bits of paper all over her. Some pieces went up and into her hair and some went down and all over her clothing. Chuckling once he turned back to face Kenzie like nothing had happened and said "So, how bout your 'RENTS' they gonna let you road trip it about 2,600 miles...give or take, with two young strapping guys, such as myself and...your Jon feller?"

Sitting back in revelrie, Kenzie watched Kaleb and Lucy continue to flirt. It was quite adorable in her opinion because it was so unlike Lucy to flip her lid over some guy, however it was a welcome change from her friend. Oh I am so going to grill her over this later...and once Kate finds out...oh the fun will begin then. Kenzie was already making plans to call Kate as soon as she left to plot a sleepover to corner Lucy. Of course, she knew that they would equally grill her just as much about her reunion with Jon, but she was fully prepared for that should the occasion arise. Everything in her world had been set right once she and Jon had gotten back together. He was the one thing in her entire life that she loved more than anything else.
Her subconscious was brought out of her thoughts by Kaleb asking her a direct question. Smiling, she replied, "Oh my parents won't mind. I know that for a fact, especially if Jon is coming with me. They know how protective he is and wouldn't let anything happen to me." She giggled and looked out the window for a minute before reverting her attention back to Lucy. "And I don't think it's wise if we even ask Kate's parents if she can come. They have pretty much restricted her summer to Forks and the occasional trip to Seattle, which will be rare."

Kaleb started teasing Lucy about saying ‘rents and she placed a mock grin on her face and then she stuck her tong out, “I did just say ‘rents.” Before it really registered to Lucy what Kaleb was doing he had taken the pieces of the straw wrapper and blew them all over her. Lucy shook her hair and watched pieces come flittering down to the table, and then Lucy brushed the pieces that had landed on her cloths. She heard Kaleb chuckle a little before he turned and began talking to Kenzie as if nothing had happened. ‘Oh you are so going to regret that here in a second Cowboy.’ Lucy thought to herself. She glanced at her plate and listened as Kaleb talk to Kenzie. Lucy subtly grabbed a piece of ice from her drink and quickly slipped it down the back of Kaleb’s shirt. She scooted back as far as she could and casually began to eat her french fries looking across the table, “Sorry what were you saying about Kate and her parents?” Lucy had a glint in her eyes as she sent the mental message to Kenzie, ‘Okay Kenize I dare you to bring on the grilling about Kaleb. I could totally win that conversation.’

Pretending to be ignoring Lucy was harder than he thought. Even though he was teasing her, it was hard not to look at her, to search for that warm smile and those stunning eyes. Barely listening to Kenzie he slowly shifted his eyes to try and see what Lucy was up to. He thought he felt her move, and then as his eyes landed on her, he saw her reteat into the corner as far as she could. Then, pointedly to Kenzie, she said "Sorry what were you saying about Kate and her parents?"
He was confused about why she was trying to get as far away from him as possible and was about to say "I took a shower earlier, do I stink that much?" But before he could get the words out he felt the repercussion of sharing his torn up straw wrapper with Lucy. She was sharing her ice...it just happened to slide all the way down into his tucked in undershirt and was beginning to melt. After taking a sharp breath in, through his clenched teeth as he finally felt the cold sink in he said "Man, thanks for sharing Luce...I know I'm hot, thanks for coolin me off..."
He grimaced, for show, as he leaned back in his seat just to pretend like he didn't care that the ice was bothering him. As contradictory as that sounded to him he knew he was being a brat. After he leaned back, he put his arm around Lucy and then he couldn't help but feel bad for leaving Kenzie there, just sitting and having to put up with their childish flirting. 'Sorry Kenz, but she'll get over it, I mean, I'm sure she and her Jon-man have had their fair share of flirting too...

Watching the continuation of the flirting between her best friend and Kaleb made Kenzie almost want to laugh out loud. A smirk spread thinly across her lips as she watched Lucy slip the ice cube down Kaleb's shirt. She fought to bite back a round of laughter and thought of her first few dates with Jon and how much he had flirted with her. She hadn't been the one to flirt all that much at first, being she was still uncomfortable with flirting in the first place because of Jerron. However, she was singing a different tune now that she and Jon were nearing one year together. It was weird to Kenzie that she had almost been with Jon for an entire year, minus their three month separation, which she didn't count in her mind.
Kenzie looked back and shrugged her shoulders to Lucy about Katelyn. "As far as I know, her parents have tightened the leash on her this summer because it's the summer before senior year and all," she said, scrunching her nose. "They told her that her trips are pretty limited to Seattle and inside Washington state, so going to Texas would be a no-go for her." Kenzie sighed apathetically and rested her chin on her hand as her elbow hit the table. "Her parents are a little nutzo about the whole 'getting into college thing' for her, which is understandable on some level, but geez...cut the girl some slack. It is summer."

After Lucy slid the piece of ice down the back of Kaleb’s shirt she realize that he almost looked like he was watching her out of the corner of his eye. She tried to place a hand over her smile that was breaking her face. Lucy glanced at him out of the corner out of her eye to see a small frown creasing his brow. A short snort of laughter escaped as she struggled to focus on her best friend sitting across from her. Lucy bit the inside of her cheek fighting back a laugh as Kaleb sucked in a breath. "Man, thanks for sharing Luce...I know I'm hot, thanks for coolin me off..."
Lucy giggled and nodded to Kaleb, “No problem Cowboy.” Lucy rolled her eyes and scooted back over as she watched Kaleb grimace; a little too much. ‘Well at least he is trying to be nice.’ Lucy thought to herself. Kaleb rested back against the booth and Lucy knew that the ice had to be bothering him. She didn’t mind though as Kaleb put an arm around her, but trying to be smooth Lucy stuck her tongue out the side of her mouth and turned back to listen to Kenzie. Lucy knew very well that she had a grin on her face but she didn’t really care at that point. She was going to be up shit creek with Kenzie as soon as they left, or Kaleb left whichever happened first. ‘Might as well enjoy it while I can.’ Lucy thought with a sigh to herself.
Right then she really wanted to mess with Kenzie’s head, using that as an excuse rather then the truth that she wanted to Lucy reached up her hand and locked her fingers with Kaleb’s. It felt just like it had that afternoon that Lucy had spent out at Kaleb’s ranch; relaxed and normal. Lucy smiled inside of her head as she remembered how Kaleb had slid his hand into hers the first time they held hands. It was natural and Lucy felt completely relaxed as she responded to Kenzie’s explanation of Kate’s parents. “Yeah evil parents for wanting their kid to go to college.” Lucy grinned to show Kenzie she was kidding, “I mean it is ridicules how strict their being but considering some of the stunts that Kate pulled I don’t really blame her ‘rents.” Lucy glanced at Kaleb when she exaggerated the word ‘rents.

He knew he was being a little dramatic, but he didn't really care. Glancing over in her direction, he caught her roll her eyes and stick her tongue out at him; he could almost hear her melodic voice say 'Ha! Take that Cowboy!" The grin on Lucy's face that followed took him off guard for a few moments, 'Damn...gets me every time'
Just as he thought he was coming back down to earth from his head being in the clouds, he felt Lucy's fingers intertwine with his and he became all the more light headed. It was a good thing he was sitting down at the moment because he hadn't expected for her to take his hand...needless to say, it was a pleasant surprise. He was beginning to crave that natural feeling of being around Lucy more and more with each passing day, ever since she came out and visited him at his family's ranch a few weeks ago.
Kaleb's mind whipped right back to the diner as he heard Lucy say the word 'rents' again. He cringed slightly and slowly cocked his head to glare at her with a sarcastic look. "Well. maybe her "RENTS" will be a little more lenient than you guys let on? he said emphasizing that word again and relaxing his tone and facial expressions into a joking manner. "But, what kind of stunts are we talking about? It's none of my business, I know, but I can't help but be a little curious."

Still watching the natural flirtatiousness between Kaleb and Lucy, Kenzie found herself to be quite amused at the whole banter. It was almost like watching a more sarcastic version of herself and Jon...a way more sarcastic version, like sarcasm on crack. Kenzie held back another round of giggles as she watched the goofy look spread across Kaleb's face as Lucy smiled at him. Oh, he is definitely so into her... she thought to herself. It's like seeing Jon's face all over again the first time we were really officially dating. I wonder if... her thoughts quickly trailed off as she heard the question come from Kaleb's mouth about Katelyn.
Kenzie's nose scrunched a little at the question, knowing that the answer would not exactly portray their best friend in the best of lights. However, knowing that she knew the most about the situation, she felt like it was her place to explain what happened. "Well...Kate has always been sort of the wild child out of the three of us," she began slowly, stirring her drink absentmindedly with her straw. "So, a few years back when we were about fifteen, Kate used to be into partying a lot...especially when alcohol and clubbing were involved Well, Lucy and I kept it pretty under wraps, cleaning up the messes and giving alibis to her parents until Kate got into some serious trouble. There was this one night where some guys tricked her into stealing something from a store...alcohol was involved beforehand so she didn't exactly know what she was doing." Kenzie knew that Katelyn's past was something Kate was constantly trying to get away from. It was not who she was now at seventeen and Kenzie and Lucy knew that above all people. "After the judge sentenced her to community service, Katelyn stopped all the drinking and partying...but her parents came down hard on her and haven't let up since."

Lucy was too busy day dreaming. She was holding Kaleb’s hand, which at that point was the best moment in her life. Lucy was fighting with herself to focus and listen but the fact she was holding Kaleb’s hand was far more interesting. Lucy finally gained some self control in time to watch Kaleb’s sarcastic glare "Well. maybe her "RENTS" will be a little more lenient than you guys let on?” Lucy knew that he was joking so her response was to roll her eyes and look back to Kenzie muttering under her breath, “Butthead.” A second later Kaleb said, "But, what kind of stunts are we talking about? It's none of my business, I know, but I can't help but be a little curious." Before Lucy was able to explain what had happened with Katelyn, Kenzie explained. As she listen to Kenzie explain Lucy rubbed her free hand over her face with a sigh, hearing it all again some how made her feel old. For some slightly unknown reason to Lucy she was about to put her head on Kaleb’s shoulder but the spell that had been created was destroyed by her phone vibrating in her back pocket. She had a faint flashback to English class as she half jumped in surprise.
Lucy groaned allowed and did the thing she least wanted to by letting go of Kaleb’s hand. She put her left hand down next to her and pushed herself up slightly so that she could reach in her back pocket to get her phone before it stopped ringing. Lucy settled back onto the bench and realized that instead of having her left hand on the bench it had been on Kaleb’s leg. ‘Oh. My. God.’ Lucy thought to herself as she flipped open her phone. A blush had crept up part of her face but she focused on her mother who was on the other end. “Lucy you need to go ahead and come home. We have some family coming in a couple of days, and the house needs to be cleaned.” Normally Lucy would have tried to convince her mother that their practically spotless house did not need to be cleaned, but Lucy needed an escape plan.
“Alright mom, I’ll be home in about fifteen minutes. M’k, I love you too mom.” Lucy sighed as she closed her phone, “Well party is over for me, my mom needs me to come home and clean; apparently we are going to have some company.” Lucy looked across the table, “I’ll see you and Kate at the slumber party in a couple of nights. And you,” Lucy said turning to Kaleb all thoughts of being cute went out the window, “I guess I’ll see you when I see you? Well we’re going to have to meet again and figure out more about the road trip. Anyway I’ll see you guys later.” Lucy slid out the side of the bench and fought to run out of the diner. She got into her car and as she started it Lucy muttered to herself, “Maybe I need to pull a Thema and Louise, without the Louise part.”

Kenzie watched as Lucy had a spaz-attack when her phone apparently began vibrating in her back pocket. That is so typical Lucy... she thought to herself amusingly. Watching silently as Lucy answered her phone and talked with her mother, she knew that Lucy was about to initiate her escape plan which would leave her sitting awkwardly at the diner with Kaleb. And when she did, Kenzie could have killed her right then, but didn't. She would wait until the slumber party to do that, especially with Kate there. It would be all the more fun to watch Kate grill Lucy about Kaleb than to do it herself. Kate was the more clever one when it came to subliminal torture and ways of getting people to talk. As Lucy made her exit, Kenzie nodded in reply to seeing her in a few days for the sleepover. It was going to be an interesting night...but Kenzie was looking forward to it.
Diverting her attention back to Kaleb, she laughed lightly and said, "Well, she certainly knows how to make an exit. But that's Lucy for ya." Kenzie had always known her best friend well enough to know that she would look for any excuse to get out of an awkward situation. If that were a superpower, she was certain Lucy would have it down by now. "I think I better head out too. I'm supposed to meet Jon for a date later on, so I need to go get ready," she said, getting up out of her seat. "But it was good to see you. We should all hang out sometime."
