Kaleb's growling stomach settled down a bit as he began to eat his very late lunch one summer afternoon. He had been going here and there doing many different errands for his parents that morning and his 6 o'clock breakfast was long gone. Scarfing down his food and absentmindedly staring out the window of the diner he found himself lost in memories. Scenes started playing in his head from when he lived back in Texas, memories that he hadn't thought about in months came rushing back to the forefront of his mind.
He mulled over how different things were here, compared to Texas, and then his thoughts ran across his friends and all the ruckus him and the boys use to cause. Kaleb, of course, was always the shy one, and he was always only guilty by association. Brady, his best friend on the other hand, was the brains behind most of the operations and stunts that they pulled. And the other boys just wanted in on the action but Kaleb and Brady were inseparable, no matter who else was with them.
His thoughts then began to turn and reflect on himself, and on how he found himself to be different since he moved here. It was a good different too, he found that he is able to carry on a conversation just fine with out Brady interrupting or adding in his two cents. 'Yup, Brady just had to be center of attention...maybe that's why I thought I was so shy...he never reallly let me get two words in...but he was always there for me when I needed him. Man, I need to call him.' Kaleb reached to get his cell phone out of his pocket and didn't notice that when he had sat down that it was about to fall out; so as he reached for it it slipped out of his grasp and bounced off the booth and onto the floor, breaking open in pieces. "Shhh.....eesh" he almost cussed as he picked up his phone and put it back together. He silently looked around, wondering if anyone had noticed.

Vanessa was eating her lunch/dinner of a hamburger and fries and was staring into space. She knew she must've looked like a freak just staring, but she didn't care. SHe just couldnt concentrate today. She had been this spacey since about 9 this morning. She hadn't gotten alot of sleep last night. Her two pet dogs had kept her up, and her mom was always cleaning and doing work around the house these days. Whether it be painting the kitchen or mowing the lawn, she did it. Vanessa had offered her help several times but her mother seemed to be in her own little world too.
So, Vanessa had spent her entire morning reading her new copy of Moby Dick and writing to her grandmother in Missouri. Basically, she had just been plain bored all morning. SHe had needed to get out of the house and do something so she just came to the diner.
She was just about to finish the last bite of her hamburger when she heard something clatter to the floor behind her. She turned around and saw tall guy with brown hair picking up what looked like a broken phone. She sighed remembering days back at her old school where she had completely embarassed herself with her klutzy-ness and her shy personality. She went to help him get his phone and introduced herself. "Here you go." she handed him a piece and looked up at him. "Hey. Im Vanessa Camden."

As Kaleb began to straighten up in his seat from bending over to pick up his phone he realized he was missing a piece. And then from out of nowhere there stood this girl and she was holding something. She said '"Here you go...Hey. Im Vanessa Camden." The sudden appearance of the girl made him jump. But then he replied, "Oh, um. Thanks. I'm Kaleb Hall." The girl had brown hair, a pretty face, and apparently she was nice. "You from around here? I don't think we've met before." Kaleb motioned for her to sit, and said, "Join me, if you'd like."
Looking around the empty diner Kaleb didn't mind having company. Here lately he had been wondering what other kids did up here during the summer, maybe by meeting more people he could go and do more things than chores and helping his dad fix things up at the house. Yeah he was friends with Kate, Kenzie, and Lucy, but the more the merrier right? He had met a couple of guys at school, but none were too excited about being friends with a redneck from Texas, so for some reason he was beginning to get a lot of friends who were girls. That fact, Kaleb didn't really mind, it was just that he needed some time to be a boy and raise a little cane with the boys too. But as for now he started to pick off the remnants of his plate as he waited in silent embarrassment because someone had seen his little spill.

Vanessa smiled a little as the guy jumped. Kaleb was his name. He must be the guy that Kenzie and Katie were talking about at school. She hadn't seen Kenzie and Katie in a while and was often alone. She needed more friends and he looked friendly enough. "Oh, um thanks." she said sitting down across from him in the booth. "Yeah, I just moved here a little while ago. Im surprised I haven't met you before." Vanessa was already bored with Forks. She wanted, more then anything, to just lay in the warmth and sun bathe for a while. She hoped the sun would come out soon. She continued to smile as he sat in the booth silently with bright red cheeks. She could tell he was embarassed. "You don't have to be embarassed. Trust me, Ive done worse." She smiled even wider remembering back at the old house how many times she had fell at school or dropped her books. Anything klutzy and she has done it!

"Haha, well thanks for the empathy, but yeah, I mean, you looked kinda familiar, I think I saw you around a time or two at school. Where are you from originally?" Kaleb then began to feel a little awkward at this situation. He didn't know what else to say really. Thinking about Brady again he definitely knew that he would be surprised to hear at how well Kaleb has been doing.
Turning his thoughts back to Vanessa he began to play with the straw wrapper, something that he had done a few days back and it brought those memories flooding back. He smiled inside his head at himself 'Certainly a good day....Oh.' Kaleb couldn't help himself. He couldn't stop making himself become sidetracked when he knew that he should be paying attention to the company that he himself had invited to join him. 'Focus, man'

Vanessa noticed that Kaleb seemed to be distracted and she was confused, trying to think of what was on his mind. Of course, she wouldn't ask him. It was a little to personal to be trying to get into someone's head on the first day you met them. Although he was distracted she continued the conversation, feeling as if she was talking to herself. "Yeah probably. You hang out with Kenzie and Katie and their friend..." for some reason, Vanessa couldn't bring herself to remember the name. She thought her name was Lucy but wasn't sure considering she had never met her. "Lucy?" When he asked where she was from she tried to word her response the best she could. Her life was kind of confusing and she wasn't going to spill her guts to him and freak him out. " Um, well I was born in North Carolina, but I moved around alot. I moved here from New York City though."

Kaleb finally tuned in enough and heard Vanessa say, "Yeah probably. You hang out with Kenzie and Katie and their friend..." As Vanessa struggled to say her name, Kaleb was thinking 'Hmmph, not exactly the order I'd have put them in but ok...' Then he realized that she must not have met Lucy either because she said it questioningly, and moved right on into answering his first question. "Um, well I was born in North Carolina, but I moved around a lot. I moved here from New York City though."
"Hmm, that's cool, from extreme East to extreme West. I went the other way, I went from extreme South to extreme North; I'm from Texas...as if you didn't notice though, ha. I stick out in this town like a sore thumb, but I'm beginning to like it; anyways, mind if I ask why you moved around so much?" Kaleb really hoped that his inability to focus on one thing at a time wasn't offending Vanessa.

She knew she must have been right about the Lucy name because he hadn't corrected her on it. "Hmm, that's cool, from extreme East to extreme West. I went the other way, I went from extreme South to extreme North; I'm from Texas...as if you didn't notice though, ha. I stick out in this town like a sore thumb, but I'm beginning to like it; anyways, mind if I ask why you moved around so much?" She smiled. She didn't mind at all. Honestly, she really had no reason. Her mom just didn't like staying in one place long. "No reason really. My mom doesn't like to stay in one spot to long. She was online googling small cities and found Forks." Vanessa laughed. Not the most conventionable way to find your new home. "She just really didn't like New York city when we moved there. So, she found this and here we are.
