Leaving the home he loved was never on his list of things to do. Kaleb loved that farm with his whole being, and now, here he was, staring at a sign that said 'Forks High School - Home of the Spartans.' Watching other students file into the doors of this small town high school was fairly intimidating to him. He really didn't feel like going through this. Why can't I still be sitting in MY classrooms, learning from MY teachers, and talking to MY friends? Yes, he was proud that his mother had earned the opportunity to teach at the local university. But he still did not want to be here. He was still in shock that such a small town held anything remotely close to a Jr. College, let alone a University. Kaleb knew he was being selfish, but he also didn't care. As he trudged up to the door he complained more to himself...and then all of the sudden, felt guilty. His mother deserved a chance to do what she was passionate about. He also realized that between now and the time when his father found a new job that she would be the only one 'bringin home the bacon' and hoped that his father could find a job quickly.
His family had been here for about two weeks but he was just now making his grand entrance to his new school. He braced himself for the day ahead, stepped inside of the school, looked around at the kids going this way and that way, and told himself that things were gonna be Finer than a frog's hair...right?

Kenzie stepped inside the doors of Forks High to begin another day as usual. Since Jon was no longer in high school, he couldn't come with her. Plus, he lived in La Push on the reservation with the other Quieutes. However, now that Lucy was in Forks, things weren't so dreary. Having her best friend there was the best thing that could have happened to Kenzie, besides Jon of course.
When she walked through the door, she immediately saw someone she never saw before. It was a new guy, obviously, since their school wasn't that big to begin with. She decided to take pity on the guy and introduce herself. Walking over she sweetly said, "Hi, you must be new. I'm Kenzie Karter."

"Uh....Hi, yes'em I am. I'm Kaleb Hall very nice to meet ya, Miss Kinzie. Say, can you point me to where I need to be going?" He clumsily pulled out his schedule and held it out for her to look at. Yep, a very long day indeed.

Lucy sighed as she pulled into the parking lot of her new high school. This was going to be a huge change from Seattle but starting a new school somewhere so small is more intimidating. Lucy got out of her car then slipped her IPod into her back pocket. ‘Chill Luce just pretend like you are on performance’. It probably was not the best idea for Lucy to not at least ask Kenzie where the office was. Lucy sighed again hoping that she could at least find someone that would point her in the right direction. The town of Forks really was not that huge, so how spread out could the lone high school be? Lucy grinned as the beat of the song that she was listening to picked up. She could feel herself dancing up the stairs and a few feet down the hallway. Lucy then saw her best friend Kenzie talking to a guy that Lucy did not recognize. She knew enough about Jon that this was not him. Despite the stranger Lucy took out her IPod and sauntered up to Kenzie, “Hey you! Could you show me where the office is at?”

Before Kenzie could reply to Kaleb, Lucy came bounding up right next to her. Kenzie had forgotten that Lucy would be new too, so she would need directions. She decided to introduce the two before any awkward silence ensued. "Kaleb, this is my best friend Lucy; Lucy this is Kaleb. Both of you are new here to Forks High actually," she said quickly. "How about I show you both to the office and then I can give better directions from there?"

“Yeah not that I could really get lost her or anything, but I need my class schedule and all that fun stuff.” Lucy said grinning at her friend. She was still in the mindset of a performance but she put on a genuine smile for the guy that Kenzie had just introduced. “Hi, it is nice to meet you.” Lucy did not know why but she felt the compulsion and she held out her hand as she kept her friendly smile in place. Lucy realized that she probably had made herself look like a moron, and she begged inside her head that Kaleb would at the least shake her hand.

Kaleb absentmindedly cocked one eyebrow, and flashed his crooked grin as he stretched out his hand to return the greeting coming from a fellow new-comer. He was pretty impressed with the fact that this Lucy gal had offered a handshake before he had a chance to offer one himself, and unexpectedly he was drawn to her bright, innocent smile. Wow, I'm not the only new person here? Interesting. "Very nice to meet ya too, Lucy. And yeeeeah, findin' the office is prolly a great idea, after yall." Ugh. He already noticed the difference in his pure Texan accent as compared to the way they talked.
As he moved to allow the girls room around him, he took a look around again at the other students. He noticed that his big clunky cowboy/work boots, his wrinkled and untucked button down collared shirt, and his faded and worn blue jeans made him stick out like a sore thumb. He was really glad that he had decided against wearing his cowboy hat, at least for the first day.

‘Oh thank God that I did not freak him out’ Lucy thought to herself. ‘And that I am not the only new person in town’. Lucy shook Kaleb’s hand and let her hand drop to her side, ‘Doesn’t have a bad hand shake either. Stop that Luce! Focus’. Lucy could not stop a small grin on her face as Kaleb spoke and stepped to the side to allow Kenzie and her room to go first. Lucy followed close after Kenzie just in case her friend would forget to turn around and check on the two new students. Lucy and glanced up at…oh who was she kidding she had to look up at almost everyone; she rolled her eyes at herself and then she looked up at Kaleb. “Not trying to take Captain Obvious’ job or anything like that, but you are not from around this area are you?”

'Busted' he thought, and blushed. Grinning sheepishly he answered, "Um, no...I'm not. I'm from Texas and kinda still in shock that I'm not there right now." Once he said that, things really sunk in for the first time...he really didn't live in Texas any more. He really didn't have any friends here, and he really wished he was not indoors. Surprising himself, he hoped that these two girls who had been nice enough to introduce themselves would be able to put up with his shyness long enough to get to know the real Kaleb and hoped that he could call them friends soon. Back in Texas he had a couple of close friends, but they had been frineds since they were in diapers, and they all had similar backgrounds and hobbies. Here, he was a lone duck.
Kaleb realized that he was going to have to really try and be more social than he had been in the past if he was going to be making any kind of friends. Remembering what his mother had told him before leaving the house that day he thought, 'I gotta be a friend to make a friend.' So, trying his best to pull off a genuinely confident smile, he said "So, how 'bout yerself? You from somewhere near by, or are you as much an ailen as I am?"

Kenzie almost giggled the moment Lucy met Kaleb. She had that look in her eye; the one she only got when she thought someone was cute. However, Kenzie decided to not say anything about it. "Actually, we're both from Seattle originally," Kenzie said sweetly. "I moved here two years ago and then this one here," she nodded to Lucy in a playful nature, "she moved out here a couple of days ago because we couldn't be apart. We've been best friends since we were five and never stay apart long." The last part made Kenzie laugh a little because it was true.
"Well, I guess I could show you both the office now so you can get to your first class," she said, turning around and beginning toward the office in a slow manner so Lucy and Kaleb could keep up.

As Lucy listened to Kaleb talk about Texas it was pretty obvious that he seemed homesick. Who could blame him though? Lucy smiled at Kaleb referring to himself as and alien. The move from Texas was a big change compared to her own move from Seattle. Lucy fought the urge to slap a hand over her eyes as Kenzie talked to Kaleb. She then realized that while her actions would not seem out of place to a relative stranger that Kenzie would pick up on the differences in no time. In fact part of Lucy wanted to smack Kenzie in the back of the head as a preemptive strike, but she settled with rolling her eyes at her friend, “Gee Kenzie you make our friendship sound so fun.” A second later though and Lucy allowed a small giggle to reaffirm that she had just been kidding with her friend.
“It is pretty much like Kenzie said.” Lucy added as they continued towards the office. “I was born and raised in Seattle so moving here wasn’t much of a change for me. At least not half as bad as the one that you’ve had to make all the way from Texas; that really has to suck.” Lucy thought for a moment if the situation had been reversed. It would have been awful to move so far from what had been home for so long and the friend and other family that would be in a completely different time zone. He seemed like a nice enough guy and Lucy knew that he probably was going to have no trouble in making friends. ‘And no problem getting a girlfriend…GAH! Don’t even go there Luce there is no point.’ Lucy stopped the train of thoughts again besides she had too much going on in her life to try and add a guy to the mix. Lucy mentally sighed and told herself that she was going to settle with trying to be his friend; since it was obvious that he would probably need them since Kaleb was new to the town of Forks as well.

'These girls are funny, they do seem like very best friends.' Their playful banter made Kaleb smile and their friendship reminded him of his best friend, who is more like his brother. Their families had been friends since before they were born; which happened to be during the same week of each other. His name is Brayden and despite the fact that they are practically brothers they are nothing alike. Brayden (a.k.a. Brady) is loud and very social. He has 2 older twin brothers and three younger sisters. Talk about rowdy, his whole family is a mess of rowdy-ness! 'Huh,' He laughed to himself feeling a bit nostalgic 'Good Ol' Brady' thought Kaleb.
Snapping back to reality he realized that he needed to answer a question. "Yup, it sucks alright." Rolling his eyes at himself because he really didn't know what else to say. He knew right then that his shyness was getting in the way of conversation. 'Aren't we to that danged office yet?'

As they continued down the hall Lucy sighed internally wondering if she had been wrong about the school being spread out. She patiently waited for a few moments to see if Kaleb would say anything and just as Lucy thought he wouldn’t Kaleb answered that it did suck. Lucy figured at that point Kaleb did not want to talk about missing home anymore. After a few seconds of running through stupid questions that were only yes or no answers Lucy looked up at Kaleb, “So what do you like to do with your free time?”
It seemed like a safe enough topic to talk about, and hopefully cover any awkward silences on her end. Lucy hated feeling like there were people waiting on her to do something. Lucy also made a note to check her height when she got home because walking next to Kaleb made her feel a lot smaller and shorter then she actually was. ‘Maybe it’s the boots?’ Lucy wondered absentmindly even though she knew it was a silly thought. She mentally shook her brain so that she could hear what Kaleb’s answer would be, or to see if Kenzie would join the conversation.

Kenzie walked absentmindedly in front of Kaleb and Lucy, leading them to the office, while paying attention to their conversation for a little while. They seemed to be really hitting it off and Kenzie couldn't help but smile. Oh Luce...you are the flirt indeed, she thought laughingly. But she knew that this was good for her best friend. Kaleb seemed genuinely friendly and that was a good thing.
Right as they neared the office, she turned around and smiled. "Alright, there's the office right there," she pointed to her left. "I guess I better get to class myself. I'll see you around lunch, Luce?"

Lucy knew that Kenzie was getting a kick out of the conversation that she and Kaleb were having. That was if she was even listening at all. More likely then not Kenzie was day dreaming about her boyfriend Jon. Lucy mentally sighed she was finally beginning to warm up to Jon much to Kenzie’s joy and what seemed to be Jon’s relief. Jon seemed like he genuinely wanted to be everything and anything that Kenzie needed in her life, and as long as that did not get Kenzie into heartache and trouble then Lucy was happy. Before Lucy could think any further about her best friend’s relationship Kenzie came to a stop in front of a door and announced that they were at the office.
Lucy was so wrapped up in her thoughts about several things that she smiled and nodded at Kenzie, “Yeah see you then.” It was not until Kenzie was walking away from her that Lucy realized she was alone outside the school office with a practical stranger. A guy stranger, and a cute guy no less. There was a part of Lucy at that point that wanted to yell at Kenzie to come back immediately and not leave her alone again. Only a few seconds after that thought came the rational ones that told her it was not a big deal to be standing around a school hallway with a classmate. ‘You are seriously getting this worked up? Chill Luce you are going to be fine. Just smile and be friendly. Relax.’ Lucy reasoned herself into a relative calm and looked to Kaleb with a small grin, “Looks like we get to fend for ourselves.”
