Bella did not trust Devonny one bit. For one, her eyes told the truth of her diet. Not even the cleverest of vampires could hide if they were vegetarian or not. And she had just showed up on the Cullen's doorstep, uninvited and without warning. The only thing holding her from kicking the stranger called Devonny out was Edward. Apparently there was something he knew that she did not, just yet anyways.
"We can talk in private," she said, looking into Devonny's eyes. "I believe one of the upstairs bedrooms is open at the moment, so we can go up there to talk."
Edward, I want you to stay close by and keep reading her thoughts. The first sign of trouble, you have to come in, she thought, lowering the shield.

Edward could tell the Bella didn't trust Devonny. Edward heard Bella's thoughts when she lowered her shield. Don't worry love, I will be close. I can be at your side in seconds." He whispered to her. Edward knew that Bella was always suspicious of new comers and with Devonny's eyes as a give away to her diet, Bella would be even more on guard.

Devonny nodded in understanding. She smiled a bit, a friendly smile. She was waving a metaphorical white flag. "Lead the way, Bella." Devonny wanted to be on friendly terms, but the atmosphere of the room was making her nervous and she kept her guard up. Plus, the horrid smell coming from the one Devonny knew wasn't a vampire or human kept her on edge. If she were human, she'd be shaking, possibly fumbling over her words. But the vampire traits kept her smooth and sensual, just as she'd been since the day she was turned.

Bella lead Devonny to the upstairs bedroom that used to belong to Edward once upon a time before they were married. Once upstairs, she shut the door behind her, knowing that Edward was not far away and could hear everything that was going on. When she turned around, she tried to manage somewhat of a friendly demeanor, but it was difficult for her to do so being that Bella was under so much stress as of late. "What is it you wanted to talk about?"
The curiosity was finally getting to Bella and she had to know why Devonny was there and wanting to speak to her alone. This was not something that ordinarily happened anymore since most of the people Bella knew had either passed on or were vampires/werewolves. It was unusual to get visitors asking for her specifically.

Devonny followed Bella, stepping into the room that they came to. She looked around. It was small, but it had a wonderful view out the French glass doors. It was empty of occupancy, as far as she could tell. Empty shelves were hanging on the walls and the bookcase was full of dusty books that had been left forgotten by the previous owner. Devonny stepped to the door, looking out. Her hand was at her upper chest, holding the cameo necklace that she never took off. Fingering the ivory and continuing to look out the window, she finally spoke. "Bella, dear, did your mother ever mention a cousin who mysteriously disappeared? And whose husband was found dead?" She turned and looked the girl straight in the eye.

Bella tried to think back to her human life and any conversation she ever had with her mother. Nothing had ever come up about a cousin that went missing or anything of that nature, but then again her human memories were dim and fading with every year that she was a vampire. "No, not that I recall," she replied.
Being in this room also brought back other memories of spending time with Edward during the first few weeks of their relationship. Those times were the ones of her human life that stood out the most, aside from those on Isle Esme. But, she had to push those aside and pay attention to Devonny. "Why do you ask that?"

Devonny let go of her necklace. She pulled the hood of her cloak down, her fingers gracing her pale face and black nail polish standing out against her porcelain complexion. The hood fell from her head, revealing her face fully. She brought her hands down to her sides, where she grasped the sides of her cloak, bringing them up so she could take a step toward Bella. "Bella... Isabella Marie... It's going to sound completely out of the blue, but I'm her." Devonny took a breath, so her words could sink into her goddaughter. But she spoke again before Bella had the chance to. "I'm Renee's cousin. And your godmother."

Bella was taken back and immediately recoiled. So many family members were coming out of the freaking blue, startling Bella and taking her by surprise, which was hard to do considering she was a vampire. It was just something that she did not like at all because so much of her human life had been surprise after surprise. Bella hated surprises. "What?" she snapped without meaning to. Are you freaking kidding me? she thought. How in the hell do I keep having so many family members coming out of the blue? she screamed in her head, lowering her shield for Edward to hear.

Devonny heard the anger, surprise, and annoyance in Bella's voice. There was something else there too, that Dev couldn't quite put her finger on. "Bella, I know you dislike surprises, but there was no other way to tell you," she explained. She didn't want Bella to hate her for what she was doing, but Devonny was all alone in the world, and as per Renee, Devonny was supposed to be a part of Bella's life. Of course, her duties were cut short after her 'disappearance,' and Devonny didn't have much experience telling family members stuff like, 'oh hi, yeah i'm your long lost godmom. also, i'm a bloodsucking vampire, but hey, we all have our flaws.' Devonny brushed a stray hair out of her face. "I know it's sudden and unexplained and everything, but I promised your mother that I'd be present in your life. I would have been there sooner, but you have to understand that I was changed only months after your birth. I couldn't be around Renee or Charlie without questions being asked."

Bella backed away from Devonny out of shock and confusion. This was not something that she wanted to deal with just a few weeks after losing Alice when she ran away. None of this was fair in her mind. Her world consisted of eight core family members: Jasper, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, Carlisle, Esme, Edward, and Renesmee. And of course there was Jacob, who would be part of their family soon enough. Rarely did anyone enter Bella's inner circle without something significant happening, like marriage or birth. This was not an easy thing for her to swallow. "I don't know how to react about this right now, but I need some time and space. I'm sorry..." She politely excused herself from the room and went immediately to Edward, who was waiting for her.

Devonny nodded slightly, and watched as Bella left the room. She sighed, turning back to the window. She tried to tune out, to give Bella privacy in case she needed to speak to someone. Devonny could hear the television down stairs and voices coming from the same area. She heard someone walk across the room downstairs as well. Ignoring the sounds around her, she once again stepped to the door, grabbing the handles and swinging them open. The fresh air hit her and she smiled, absorbing it. She listened carefully to the birds and the brook and could hear an animal splashing about in it. This is what she loved most about being a vampire. She loved being able to hear animals with miles in between her and it.

Edward caught Bella's thought when she dropped her shield. Edward knew that when Devonny told Bella who she was that Bella would react this way. Edward knew how Bella felt about surprises especially long last family member. Edward was waiting at the top of the stairs with his arms open as Bella came out of his old room. He knew that Bella would want some answers from him, about what he had read from Devonny's mind. "She is telling you the truth about her being your godmother." He whispered to Bella as he wrapped her in he protective arms.
Even after thirty years of Bella being a vampire, Edward still wanted to protect her. She was still fragile to him, even though they was equals in strength. Edward wanted to help her in any way that he could. "What can I do to make this better for you?" He asked her as he kissed the top of her head.

Going immediately to Edward's arms, she buried her face into his chest. Even if she was a vampire, it didn't mean that she was immune to emotions. Having gone through Alice leaving and then all of the drama involving Crystal, Bella was just drained and needed time to recuperate from all of the things that had happened and were continuing to happen. "Even if she's telling the truth Edward, I just cannot deal with this right now..." she trailed off, looking into his eyes intently. "Since Alice left and then...Crystal and all of her issues. I just don't have the emotional strength to deal with that." Even saying Crystal's name burned her tongue because of the betrayal she brought.
Quietly, she wrapped her arms around Edward and laid her head back on his chest, finding some comfort. "Just hold me," she whispered and felt him kiss her head.

Edward knew exactly what Bella meant. The entire family had been on an emotional roller coaster lately. Edward knew that both of them needed a vacation but that at the moment that was not possible. He wrapped his arms tighter around her and pulled her close. "I am always here for you my love. We will make it through things together. I will never leave your side is that is what you need of me." He told her as the lifted her face and kissed her on the lips.
