“Lunch is the worst part of a new high school student’s day.” Aviary sighed to herself. She had gone through three class periods successfully, surprisingly the teacher kept everyone too busy to even give them the chance to play 50 questions with her. As she scanned the café for available seats she saw all the happy unfamiliar faces chatting with others. There was a table way back in the corner with no one sitting at it, she decided it might be best to just sit down and wait and see who would sit by her, instead of randomly jumping in on the intense conversations that were surely taking place in the high school café. She laughed at the thought of her excuse but decided to go ahead and just see which students would approach her.
As she waited for someone to spot her, she began to mix her gravy and mash potatoes together. The Chicken nuggets looked at least edible and she decided to try to see if her theory was correct. Taking a bit of a chicken nugget and then chasing it down with a sip of Dr. Pepper, she glanced back up as the room began to get louder. Several groups of students had begun to file in; others were still waiting in line for food. She looked back down at her plate and began to eat some more, even if she did not met anyone today, she was bound to meet some friends later. Aviary was never too worried about meeting people, as soon as sports started back up she was bound to catch the attention of people. she knew she had a real talent for anything athletic. She smiled as she began to act out in her mind how those conversations would go. She knew people would be at awe by her skills, and probably even cheer her on during classes before a big game day. She had not made any teams yet, but she knew she would. She always seemed to find people to talk to, no matter where she went. She would only act shy the first week of school, and then she would be back to normal. Aviary enjoyed the looks on people’s faces once they realized that she was truly outgoing.

After getting himself and Emery to school, barely on time, Dakota resigned himself to getting through his first couple of classes without too much of a disturbance. After going through the usual questions that teachers asked all new students that Dakota abhorred going through a million times in each and every class. He felt like a broken CD player that repeated the same part of the same song over and over and over again. When it finally came time for lunch, he bolted from his last class to the lunch room where he could find some sort of escape from the insanity. He found it without a problem since Forks High was much smaller than his previous school.
Once he had his lunch of pizza that looked relatively edible, a few pieces of what looked like chicken nuggets, and some random veggetables, he headed out into the sea of table in search of one that he could sit at and not look completely stupid. He found a table in the very back corner with one girl sitting at it that looked like she was fairly new too, so Dakota decided to walk over and sit with her just to see if he could make a new friend in this freakishly small hell they called Forks High School. Approaching her, he smiled and asked, "Is this seat taken?" He hoped that it wasn't. The girl in front of him had long, chestnut hair and beautiful hazel eyes. Dakota had never seen anyone like her and immediately wanted to get to know her.

Aviary’s mind drifted back and forth from playing sports to trying to pass classes. She tried to predict how the school year would turn out. She wondered if it was going to be a total blow off semester, or if the classes were going to kick her in the butt. Aviary also wondered about how the good the sports teams would be. She hoped that they would at least be decent at sports. Aviary then thought about whom all she would meet, who she would enjoy and hate. Aviary knew she at least needed someone to loath because life just was not interesting without that sort of rival. Aviary was very competitive not only in sports but just about everything. She enjoyed the thrill of outsmarting those she did not get along with.
Aviary did not notice that someone was approaching her until she heard to words “Is this Seat Taken.” Aviary smiled thinking of how lucky it was to meet someone as cute as the guy standing in front of her. He had such a nice smile, but the first thing she noticed was his eyes. She adored eyes with a passion. She noticed his gorgeous Blue eyes right off the bat. Aviary was so wrapped up in his eyes that she barely noticed her smartass remark to the question. “Well I don’t know it’s a pretty full table as you can tell." Finally able to break from her trance, she introduced herself. “I’m Aviary by the way.” she said patting the seat next to her. “I promise I’m not going to bite unless I have to.” she said with a smirk. In the back of her mind she hoped he would not be too freaked out. Sometimes Aviary could not help her smartass remarks, that was just part of her nature but Aviary was pretty used to getting in trouble because of what things came out of her mouth.

As he waited for her reply, Dakota noticed that the girl seemed to be in somewhat of a daze for a moment. Dakota was used to that look for sure. Emery gave it every time she was off in her own little world thinking about something completely off topic, so it didn't phase him. When she did reply, Dakota was taken back at her sarcasm. He had never met a girl who could be as, if not more sarcastic than his sister Emery. And that was a feat he had never seen accomplished until now. He had to get to know her now, whoever she was. When she came out of her sarcasm and introduced herself as Aviary, Dakota had to smile at her unique name. He liked it. Unique names always stuck out more to him and were easier to remember in the long run.
He took a seat next to her and laughed as she promised only to bite when she needed to. "I'm Dakota," he introduced himself as he put down his backpack beside the chair and turned his attention to Aviary. "But most people just call me Cody since it's a little easier to say." Dakota laughed at himself for a moment, thinking about how only his parents called him Dakota when he was in trouble or if they wanted him to do something. "So, are you new here too or am I just the only new kid on the block?" he asked, almost immediately regretting his choice of words. That was lame... he thought to himself. She's gonna think you're some dumbass now.

Aviary smiled once she heard that his name was Dakota but he really went by Cody. She was very relieved that he was not completely freaked out by her sarcastic nature. “ so are you new here too or am I just the only new kid on the block?” Aviary bit her lip as she wanted to say something extremely sarcastic, but she held back. Be nice she thought. “ Yes, I’m just as new and clueless as you are. Maybe we should start a club or something.” she took a sip of her Dr. Pepper without taking her eyes off of Cody. “So what’s your story?” she said eagerly. Aviary was very certain she wanted to know as much as she could about Cody. It had been a while since she had felt the butterflies in her stomach dancing around. Aviary tried to wear a serious and composed face, but she could not help but smile and blush every so often. Aviary was suddenly overcome with the urge to give Cody a big hug, being the cuddle bug she was, but she reframed from doing so. She hoped she would eventually get a chance too.Aviary waited patiently for Cody to give a reply, she did not mind him taking a while to collect his thoughts. In fact she wanted him to think long and hard before he answered. She was very fascinated by his eyes, like she knew she would be.

Dakota breathed a sigh of relief as he found out that Aviary was just as new as he was. At least now he didn't feel quite as lame as he did before. Opening up his Pepsi and taking a drink as Aviary mentioned starting a club for all the new people, he couldn't help but smile at her sarcastic nature. Aviary was exactly the kind of girl he liked to hang out with and be around because she wasn't concerned with who was wearing what and who was dating who. She seemed to live more in the moment of things rather than constantly worrying about everything and everyone else. He was glad to have found a normal girl for once.
When he heard her ask for his story, he pondered for a moment before pulling together all of the recent events in his life that lead him to Forks. "Well, about two years ago my best friend Emery's parents died in a skiing accident," he began slowly, knowing this would be a lot to swallow for anyone. "And since Emery's parents and mine were so close, my family took in Emery and she's become sort of like my sister. We used to live in Portland, Oregon until it became too painful for my mom and Emery to stay there because of the memories, so we decided to move here for a fresh start." Dakota thought about his sister for a moment and wondered how she was doing in a new school. "So here I am," he declared, chuckling softly. "What about you? What brought you to the riveting town of Forks?"

Aviary felt sorry for Cody once he reviled the story of Emery. “ I’m sorry to hear that , but it was really sweet of you guys to do something like that.” she smiled. “ I bet she love you guys a lot for that.” Aviary tried not to dwell too much on his past, she did not want to put a damper on things. She decided to smoothly begin her story.“Well I’m from Paris, Texas. I moved down here with my dad because he got a job here at the local police station as a cop.” She paused for a moment. “ I did not really know my mother other than the fact she was a complete and total slut.” She threw her hands slightly up in the air. “but I’m not judging maybe she had a complete and legitimate reason to run off to California and marry someone else when I was two.” Aviary said jokingly. She could not lie to herself though,She was hurt by the whole event even though she did not fully understand it at the time since she was so young. “But, My dad and I get by. I play booth mother and daughter to him. Sometimes I’m surprised I can even take care of a grown man and myself. I know the whole thing was very hard on him, so I do my best to bring him comfort.” She said softly. Aviary smiled at the thought of her relationship with her dad, she was very lucky to be where she was, despite everything that had happened.

Dakota nodded as Aviary noted that Emery loved them a lot for taking her in. He knew how true that was. From the moment Emery and he had been born, they had been bickering and squabbling like siblings. So much so that their mothers swore up and down that they were siblings, just from different parents. However, no matter how much they bickered and argued, Dakota knew that he would always take up for Emery and have her back. He loved her as his little sister and would always love her that way. And if any guy hurt her, he had the right as her brother to kick that guy's ass to kingdom come. But that was just part of being a brother to Dakota.
Listening to Aviary tell her story, Dakota developed a whole new respect for the girl sitting next to him. Her mother abandoning her at two-years-old was not something he would have ever expected. He wondered what kind of mother could abandon someone as wonderful as Aviary, but kept his lips zipped in case it was more sensitive a topic than she lead on. When she spoke of her father, he could tell that she loved him dearly and that he was there for her. He was happy that she had him in her life to take care of her and for her to take care of him. Sometimes that is exactly what is needed. "Sounds like you and your dad are pretty close," he said, giving her a small smile. "And that he really appreciates all you do for him."

“Sounds like you and your dad are pretty close” Cody flashed a smile at Aviary and her heart skipped a beat. “And that he really appreciates all you do for him.” Aviary was certain that what Cody said was true. She did care about her father a lot, they had held each other up through the whole divorce. They both encouraged each other to look at the things they had instead of the things they lost. Aviary sheepishly smirked as she thought about how sometimes she drove her father nuts. "Well like all families, we can get on each other nerves. My dad is not too fond of me running my mouth off during games, he says sometimes I get so competitive and caught up in my smartass remarks that I miss the fun of the game.” Aviary winked at Cody, and gave a smile.
Aviary began to twist strains of her hair between her fingers, it was a nervous habit she had developed, like many girls, when talking to guys that were cute. Aviary was very good at masking her nervousness with confidence. Normally any emotion she showed to the world, was usually the opposite inside. Every once in a while she would let her guard down and be able to be read like an opened book. Aviary’s dad was the best at figuring out how she really felt, to the point it was annoying.

Dakota laughed as Aviary talked about how all families got on each other's nerves from time to time and how she had a smart mouth. He immediately thought about Emery's own smartass comments that she seemed to enjoy using on him all the time. They may have not been biologicially brother and sister, but they sure acted like it most of the time. "I definitely agree with that," he chuckled. "All families know exactly how to get under each others' skins or know exactly how to piss them off in the most subtle of ways...at least that's what Emery does to me." Dakota bit into one synthetic-looking chicken nuggets and chewed on it apathetically. At least it was food and he had something to eat until he could get home and raid the fridge for real food or wait on his mom to cook dinner.
Looking back over at Aviary, he noticed her twirling a few pieces of her hair in between her fingers. He could tell that this was somewhat of a nervous tick or something...benefits of living with Emery is that he picked up on these sort of things. Being the new kid in any school was terrifying, at least that's what it was for girls...or so he thought from how Emery reacted. Then again, being the new guy on campus wasn't a stroll in the park either. "So, how are you liking things so far?" he asked, deciding that things would remain as simple as possible for the time being so Aviary could relax. "I mean, I know I came from a huge school compared to this place, so it's a little weird for me."

Aviary thought for a moment as she replayed the school day so far over in her mind. She had decided that she did not hate the school, neither did she like it so far. “It’s ok I guess, I mean classes don’t seem to change in interest level no matter what school you go too. It is small, and a little strange, but I kind of like all the legends. It makes me feel like I’m not at a completely normal and boring school and I kind of like that.” Aviary paused slightly. “It’s like every school has a little something special to offer the world, that is at least interesting, and well all the strange things that go on here is what makes this special.”
“So what are your thoughts on the school?” Aviary smiled. “I’m sure your just bursting with tons of insight coming from a big school.” Aviary laughed a little to herself. Aviary went back to eating her lunch as she waited to Cody to answer. She was feeling more and more comfortable as time went on, and she was very happy that she had at least someone to talk to during lunch. Even if things went horribly wrong this semester, she knew at least one person that would be willing to talk to her.

The more Dakota listened to Aviary, the more he was intrigued by this girl he had just met. When he first moved to Forks, he had heard all the legends and weird stories from the locals about some strange family known as the Cullens, but he usually wrote it off as hearsay from the locals. He wondered which legends Aviary had heard, but decided to save that for a later conversation. It wouldn't do him any good to use all his topic ideas now if he wanted any chance of having later conversations with Aviary, which he did. Dakota was incredibly happy that he had found someone aside from his sister to talk to at Forks High. Maybe this won't turn out to be high school hell after all... he thought to himself.
His attention was averted again when Aviary asked him what his thoughts on the school were since he had come from a large school. Hu paused for a moment and set his Pepsi down. "I like it so far...I mean classes aren't that hard, so I won't have to worry there," he said. "I would say the biggest adjustment is coming from a school of nearly five thousand to one with just over five hundred, but so far it's been great." Dakota skimmed through his first three classes in his mind, none of which were going to be challenging at all. In Portland he had taken all advanced courses, so he was well prepared for whatever Forks High could throw at him. "So, what's your next class?" he casually tacked onto the end of his reply, hoping he would at least have one class with her.

Aviary had to think for a moment before she could answer Cody’s question. “Physics” she finally said with a smile, she was very proud with herself for remembering. “I kind of like it a lot actually. Math and Science is kind of my thing.” Aviary had always been good at the more technical stuff; she was not too good and abstract thing though. She dreaded essays and reading various book. She kind of frowned at the fact she had to read an extremely old book about the 1920’s called The Great …something rather she always forgot the last part.“How about you, what class do you have?” She secretly hoped that maybe he would have physics as well. Aviary mind drifted to her dad as she suddenly began to wonder how he was doing. She hoped that maybe things were working at just as well for him as it was for her. She waited for Cody to reply but before he could she decided to ask another question. “Do you want to explore this town with me later sometime after school?” She smiled hoping that she was not being too forward. It was good to at least have one person she could at least hang with. " i mean you dont have too, i was just wondering." she added quickly.
Lunch was almost over and she could see the various student stand up from their seats and throwing their trash away. she stood up but made sure Cody knew she was still listening to his conversation. she would be late to her next class if she had too, she always hated how good things end so fast.

Hearing Aviary's response, Cody could hardly contain his excitement he was in the next class with her. But, he did reign it in enough to where it wasn't as noticable unless you really knew him. He knew that if Emery were there with him, she would be all over this and he would have all sorts of blackmail hanging over his head, but she wasn't so he was free to do as he wished. When she asked him what class he had next, he was just about to answer when she asked another question on top of that, which completely caught him off guard in a good way. It meant that she wanted to hang out with him more, which he was not opposed to in any way, shape, fashion, or form. As she got up to throw away her trash, he did the same. "Actually, I would love to hang out with you sometime and explore the wonders and mysteries of Forks," he said, giving a laugh and a bright smile.
Turning around, he grabbed his backpack and took her bag as well. In his lifetime, he had been raised to be a gentleman and walk a girl to class...even if she did have the same class as you. "And my next class is Physics too," he added with an even brighter smile as he waited for her to lead the way out of the cafeteria to their next class. Cody hadn't ever really met a girl like Aviary, but he was sure that he wanted to get to know her even better. She was beautiful, funny, and seemed very genuine; something Cody had not found in a girl in a very long time. She was like a breath of fresh air after being locked away from the sunlight for months.

Aviary could hardly believe her ears when Cody responded with "Actually, I would love to hang out with you sometime and explore the wonders and mysteries of Forks.” She smiled a very bright and big beaming smile and tried to contain her immense excitement for what she would know as the best first day of school in the history of her life. As soon as they threw their stuff away, Aviary smiled when he saw what Cody was doing as he reached for her backpack. “You’re such a gentlemen Cody.” Aviary said with a laugh. Her face was beginning to turn red because she was blushing. "And my next class is Physics too.” Cody waited for Aviary to lead the way, and once she turned around, so he could no longer see the expression on her face, she mouthed the words yes with excitement, and then pulled herself together so she could turn around and smile again at Cody. She could tell that things were going to be amazing in forks.
" well look on the brightside, if our teacher is boring, we can just sit in the back and carry on any intense conversations that may have been cut short because of lunch." Aviary said with a smile. Cody seemed like a great guy, and she knew in some truth that she would not only be having small talk with him, but having talks about everything under the sun. she felt so comfortable around him.
